Painter, Paddler: The Art and Adventures of Stewart Marshal is a showcase of Stewart Marshall’s art, with over 50 colour plates and a full-length biographical portrait of a talented and unusual man. Join Stewart on some of his amazing journeys, hear about his harrowing ordeals and learn about his artistic methods and techniques.

For much of the past two decades, Stewart has travelled hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres each year in a hand-built kayak, living off the land and the sea and painting on some of British Columbia’s most remote shorelines. His restless way of life has also taken him to many other distant places, from canoeing the wilds of Quebec to single-handed sailing in the South Pacific.

Born in Montreal, Stewart now lives in the coastal village of Sointula, BC. His art is sought by discerning collectors across Canada and the US; most of his work is purchased without ever reaching the gallery community.

Painter, Paddler features Stewart’s dramatic watercolour, acrylic, and oil paintings and his serigraphs. It also includes sketches and drawings from the diaries he carries with him on his kayaking expeditions.

Painter, Paddler was a finalist for the 2004 Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award, one of seven annual BC Book Prizes.
